Fifty years ago today, Gale Sayers scored six touchdowns

In December 1965, Bears running back Gale Sayers did something that hasn’t happened in 50 years since. Sayers scored six touchdowns in one game.

Dan Cahill of the Chicago Sun-Times looks back at the feat, which happened at Wrigley Field against the 49ers.

Sayers, a rookie in 1965, scored four touchdowns on nine rushing attempts, one on two receptions, and one on five punt returns. That’s six touchdowns on 16 total touches.

He also had 336 all-purpose yards in the 61-20 romp over the 49ers.

Paul Hornung of the Packers scored five touchdowns that same day, and seven players have scored five touchdowns in a game since then: Chargers tight end Kellen Winslow in 1981; 49ers receiver Jerry Rice in 1990; 49ers running back Ricky Watters in 1994; Jaguars running back James Stewart in 1997; Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander in 2002; Clinton Portis in 2003; and Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles in 2013.
