The Giants waived a guy who started three games at middle linebacker, which says more about the spot they were in than the guy himself.
Via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the Giants waived/injured linebacker Uani Unga, who was a surprise to make the roster to begin with, but started for them because of injuries to Jon Beason. He eventually lost the job to veteran Jasper Brinkley, and was dealing with a neck injury late in the season.
Undrafted out of BYU, Unga was signed to their practice squad in December 2014 before the 28-year-old was pressed into duty last year.
The Giants brought in plenty of competition at his position, re-signing Brinkley and bringing in veterans Keenan Robinson and Kelvin Sheppard. They also drafted Clemson linebacker B.J. Goodson in the fourth round, making Unga expendable.
They also signed undrafted rookie cornerback Matt Smalley, who tried out for them last weekend.
