The Cowboys are looking for a veteran backup in the wake of Kellen Moore’s broken ankle, but the answer might be right under their nose.
Head coach Jason Garrett knows the team’s offensive scheme as well as anyone, he’s got plenty of experience backing up starters in Dallas and they wouldn’t have to pay anything to make a trade for his services. On the downside, Garrett is 50 and hasn’t played in more than 10 years but he still jumped into Thursday’s practice to take some snaps for his shorthanded team.
ESPN has video of Garrett back in the saddle during the session, which went off without Tony Romo because the starter was taking one of the rest days that the team gives him over the course of training camp and the regular season. With a short hand at quarterback even shorter, Garrett jumped in and gave a visual example to rookie Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers.
The young quarterbacks got the rest of the snaps and will continue to see a fair number of them as long as the team doesn’t have someone other than Garrett to slot ahead of them on the depth chart.
