The Bills wouldn’t let defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz interview for the same position with the Redskins, but Schwartz did get to interview with someone recently.
Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports that the Bills have interviewed Schwartz for their head coaching job. Schwartz was mentioned as a candidate shortly after Doug Marrone left the team and compiled a 29-51 record as head coach of the Lions from 2009 through 2013.
That’s not a particularly impressive record and there weren’t many people who thought the Lions erred by parting ways with Schwartz last year, but the performance of the Buffalo defense last season surely gave Schwartz the chance to throw his hat in the ring for the top job. The Bills were one of the stingiest units in the league in 2014, although they were quite generous when it came to giving Schwartz a chance to rub Detroit’s nose in a loss, and a more competent showing by the team’s offense would likely have landed the team in the playoffs.
That might have led to things playing out differently with Marrone, which is a moot point now albeit one that would have guaranteed Schwartz’s return as defensive coordinator in 2015. A new coach might opt to move in a different direction, unless, of course, Schwartz winds up as that new head coach.
