Jimmy Clausen buzz dying down

Early this morning all the talk in the NFL media was about which team would trade up with the St. Louis Rams to select Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen with the first pick of the second round of the draft.

Now there’s plenty of talk that Clausen’s name won’t be the first one announced from the stage at Radio City Music Hall tonight. Two hours before the start of the second round, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said on SportsCenter that there doesn’t seem to be a lot of interest in Clausen.

“Right now there’s not a lot of buzz about Jimmy Clausen,” Mortensen said, adding that he talked to one team that thinks Texas quarterback Colt McCoy will go ahead of Clausen.

Mortensen also said that he thinks the Rams could stay put and draft Illinois wide receiver Arrelious Benn, or that they could trade the pick to a team that wants Texas linebacker Sergio Kindle.

Of course, misinformation runs rampant during the NFL draft, and it’s entirely possible that some team does desperately want Clausen, but that team is trying to avoid tipping its hand. But it’s starting to look like Clausen, who waited all Thursday night to hear his name, may have to wait a little while on Friday night as well.
