The Lions met with Champ Bailey last week, but didn’t sign him to a contract.

If they were waiting for a reason to revisit the notion, they’ve got one. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Bill Bentley tore his ACL in Monday night’s victory over the Giants.

It’s the latest in a series of injuries that limited the 2012 third-rounder to 17 games in his first two NFL seasons. Bentley had earned the slot cornerback job between Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis coming out of camp, but his injury will force Detroit to move in different directions.

Rookie Nevin Lawson took over for Bentley on Monday night and contributed to Detroit’s easy win. Cassius Vaughn is the only other corner on the active roster, Mohammaed Seisay is on the practice squad, so you’d expect to see Bailey or another cornerback joining the club in the near future.
