The Rams changed offensive coordinators this week as they try to find a way to change their fortunes amid a five-game losing streak that has ensured that their drought without a winning record will extend to a 12th year.
Whatever your opinion of Frank Cignetti’s work as offensive coordinator, it would be hard to argue that all of the blame for the offense’s role in getting to this point could be placed on his shoulders. It’s just as hard to think that new coordinator Rob Boras will be responsible for significantly better results because, as Boras admits, there’s only so much you can do to change an offense when there are four weeks left in the season.
“We have different thoughts, but at the end of the day, we’re pretty far down the road right now,” Boras said, via the team’s website. “There’s not going to be a whole lot that’s going to change. Finding out when we did, it’s hard to change a whole lot. You hope to become more efficient. We’ve got to try to put guys in the best position they can to make plays, but it can’t be a huge change. Guys can’t handle that right now. We’re too far entrenched with our system to think there’s going to be wholesale changes.”
One thing Boras did say he’d like to change is the amount of work that running back Todd Gurley is getting after he had 18 carries over the last two games. He adds that the team needs to be playing “the type of game” that allows Gurley to keep getting the ball, something that is difficult to do when you’re playing from behind. Since it’s been difficult for the 2015 Rams to avoid playing from behind, the noticeable changes in the offense may stop with the identity of the guy calling the plays.
