The Carolina Panthers continue to spend the money they won’t have to spend on first overall pick Cam Newton.
And then some.
Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that the team has agreed to terms with linebackers Thomas Davis and James Anderson (pictured) on five-year deals.
Anderson, a five-year veteran, was a full-time starter for the first time in 2010. A six-year veteran, Davis tore an ACL midway through the 2009 season. He tore it again during offseason workouts last June. Per Person, G.M. Marty Hurney said that the team believes Davis is in great physical condition.
As to the rash of new deals, Hurney explained that the team’s decision to dump contracts during the 2010 uncapped year has helped them obtain the cap space to splurge.
Next for the Panthers? According to Person, it will be linebacker Jon Beason and center Ryan Kalil.
“Our philosophy has been and will be core players,” Hurney said.
Based on all these deals, they’ve got plenty of core players. The next question is whether the core players can produce more than two wins.
