Panthers sign Stephen Hill to practice squad

Stephen Hill

Stephen Hill

When the Jets released wide receiver Stephen Hill, the 2012 second-round pick’s agent Alan Herman said that his client’s rough first two years in the NFL were due to the Jets’ unsettled and unappealing quarterback situation.

There was no mention of the injuries and dropped passes that led to high levels of frustration in New Jersey, but it seems those things resonated with the rest of the league since Hill went unclaimed on waivers over the weekend. Even the receiver-poor Panthers passed on giving Hill a spot on their 53-man roster following a workout, although they were willing to give Hill a job.

Hill has signed onto the Panthers practice squad, where he’ll work with wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl. Proehl was a client of Herman’s in his playing days and the agent pointed to him as a coach he thought would help Hill reach his potential.

The Panthers could certainly use a deep threat to go along with Kelvin Benjamin in their receiving corps and Hill’s size and speed make him a possibility for such a role if he can prove to Carolina that he has more to offer than what we’ve seen so far.
