The Panthers haven’t been eliminated from playoff contention just yet, but a 3-8-1 record and a six-game losing streak have a way of making even the most optimistic people consider whether it is time to look to the future.
Carolina is going that route at cornerback. PFT has learned, via a league source, that the team will part ways with veteran Antoine Cason so they can look at younger players. At this point in the season, all players dropped by teams are subject to waivers so the league’s other 31 teams can all put in a waiver claim if they want.
There hasn’t been much about Cason’s play this season to suggest that anyone will be inclined to make that move unless they prized his experience over his recent efforts on the field.
With Cason out of the picture, rookie Bene’ Benwikere should see a spike in playing time as the Panthers start figuring out how if he’s part of the plan to move forward from a disappointing 2014.
