Patriots cut Matt Flynn

And now the Patriots are down to one quarterback on the roster who will be eligible to play in Week One.

In a surprise move this morning, the Patriots informed quarterback Matt Flynn that he is being released, according to ESPN.

That means the only quarterbacks on the roster are Tom Brady, who is suspended for the first four games of the season, and Jimmy Garoppolo. Obviously, the Patriots will have to sign at least one quarterback soon -- most likely in time for him to take some snaps in Thursday’s preseason opener.

The departure of Flynn may be related to his hamstring injury, which kept him on the non-football injury list for the start of camp. It’s possible that the Patriots would bring Flynn back when and if he’s healthy enough to play. For now, expect to see a lot of Garoppolo in the preseason.
