Redskins drop David Amerson

Dallas Cowboys v Washington Redskins

Patrick Smith

Because of the Robert Griffin III trade, the Redskins didn’t have a first-round pick in the 2013 draft.

That made cornerback David Amerson the first player they selected that year, but the second-round selection didn’t work out as the team hoped. That much was obvious to observers when rookie Kyshoen Jarrett and newly signed Will Blackmon played ahead of him in Sunday’s win and confirmed by the team when they waived him on Monday.

Amerson made 23 starts in his first two seasons with the team, but was a frequent target for opposing offenses in those games and the Redskins signed free agent Chris Culliver this offseason to take over that starting job. With DeAngelo Hall back from injury, Amerson kept moving down the depth chart and ultimately off the roster altogether.

“I think he needs to work on consistency,” coach Jay Gruden said, via the Washington Post. “He does show flashes of being an excellent corner. He’s got the size and he’s got all the measurables for a defensive back. But for whatever reason, they don’t always show on a consistent basis when he’s out there. But we feel good about the cornerback depth that we have and we had to use that roster spot.”

Amerson is young enough that he should get other opportunities and could get claimed on waivers if there’s a team agrees with Gruden regarding those flashes of better play. The Redskins signed defensive end Frank Kearse to take Amerson’s place.
