Did you see the Chicago Cubs’ thrilling extra-inning World Series win in Cleveland on Wednesday night? Rex Ryan didn’t -- even though he went to the game.
Ryan told reporters today that he attended World Series Game 7, renting a bus to take himself and about a dozen Bills staffers on the three-hour drive from Buffalo to Cleveland. But when it started to rain with the score tied after the ninth inning, Ryan declared that it was time to go home.
“I hate to admit it. I hate to admit it,” Ryan said. “We had to [leave]. We had to get back to work. We got to get back to work. We have the rain delay, and I’m like, ‘You gotta be kidding.’ And when you look at it, it’s like, ‘Alright, when’s it gonna pass.’ I’ll be honest, I wanted to stay, but I’m like, ‘If this thing’s in a delay for a couple hours, there’s no way. We gotta get back.’ The thing that was funny, we leave. We were in the bleachers, and we slide out. I’m like, ‘God, we gotta go.’ As we go, I hear that, ‘Hey, it’s clear that the rain stopped.’ But by then, we’re like, ‘Nah, we’re heading out.’ It was disappointing.”
The rain delay was a short one, and the Cubs won the game in the 10th inning, meaning Ryan and the Bills’ staffers would have only had to stay about another half-hour to see the exciting ending. It seems a bit odd to take the time to travel to the World Series only to decide that another half-hour is more than you’re willing to invest, but then again most NFL head coaches wouldn’t dream of traveling to a baseball game during a game week. Ryan doesn’t do anything by the book.
