Simms’ friend tries to take the fall at marijuana trial

Chris Simms

In this handout photo released by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms, son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, is shown after his arrest at a police sobriety checkpoint in New York, July 1, 2010. Simms went on trial Monday in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of driving while high on marijuana. He could face up to a year in prison if convicted of the misdemeanor charge. There are a lot of legitimate reasons to discuss about the job Commissioner Roger Goodell is doing this offseason.

There are also many illegitimate criticisms we could bring up. For instance: We’re stuck posting about Chris Simms’ marijuana trial instead of OTAs.

One day after Chris Simms blamed a friend for the pot smoke in his car when he was pulled over by police, the friend indeed took the blame. Charles Granatell -- a former Bryant University quarterback -- said Simms in fact wasn’t happy when he smelled pot smoke in the car and hasn’t smoked once in the 12 years they have known each other.

One piece of evidence not in Simms’ favor: He and his friends all stopped for dessert just before getting pulled over.
