No matter how many times Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt backs second-year sixth-rounder Zach Mettenberger, it’s clear they have to look for some degree of answer at quarterback.
Either using the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft on Marcus Mariota or parlaying it into Philip Rivers would solve that problem, ostensibly.
But there’s always the chance they use the second pick on something else, and that’s what their focus this week seems to be on.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Titans are spending time with a few non-quarterbacks this week who could be viable choices at No. 2, specifically a pair of pass-rushers.
Missouri’s Shane Ray was there yesterday, and Florida’s Dante Fowler will be in town later this week. Florida State cornerback Ronald Darby (who wouldn’t be a candidate at No. 2 but might be at 33) is there today as well.
The Titans covered themselves by re-signing Derrick Morgan and acquiring Brian Orakpo in free agency, but both have question marks and shouldn’t keep them from looking at a long-term focal point for Ray Horton’s defense.
