When Broncos General Manager John Elway spoke to the media about linebacker Von Miller last week, he said that the sides had exchanged one formal contract offer and counteroffer in an attempt to find agreement on a long-term contract.
Elway didn’t characterize such an agreement as close to happening, but said he was hopeful that they’d be able to find the right numbers before the July 15 deadline for the franchise-tagged Miller to sign a multi-year contract. On Wednesday, Miller sounded the same hopeful notes while in Denver to host a charity event while saying that the process was “just business” and nothing he took negatively.
“My teammates know what type of teammate I am,” Miller said, via the Denver Post. “They know what type of guy I am. It’s just the business part of it. There’s really no hard feelings or anything like that. [The Broncos] know what type of guy I am. I’m expecting a deal any day. That’s just the type of mind-set I have.”
Negotiations with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas went down to the wire before he signed last year and plenty of other players with tags have seen things play out the same way, so there’s no reason for either side to feel put out by the pace of negotiations. With the draft starting tonight, there will be one big thing off the Broncos’ to-do list and more time to turn their attention to Miller’s deal.
