Lions signed seventh-round LB Zack Follett to a three-year contract, including a $35,600 signing bonus.
Follett, a pass-rushing outside ‘backer in Cal’s 3-4, will stay outside in Detroit and play SAM linebacker. He’ll try to make the team as a backup for Julian Peterson. Follett needs to beat out Darnell Bing and Curtis Gatewood.

Lions released QB Brooks Bollinger, LB Zack Follett, TE Dan Gronkowski, WR Dane Looker, and S Stuart Schweigert.
Follett looked great on special teams in the exhibition season, but the Lions needed more defensive value. Bollinger still has an opportunity in the UFL.
  • DET Linebacker
Lions promoted LB Zack Follett from the practice squad.
The hope is that Follett will give the special teams coverage units a boost. He has the right build (6'0/236) and enough straight-line speed to run down kick returners. Follett will also back up Julian Peterson at SAM ‘backer.

Lions re-signed exclusive rights free agent RB Cedric Peerman.
Even though the Lions are desperate at the running back spot, Peerman isn’t a lock to make the team. He’s a solid receiver out of the backfield but was cut twice as a rookie and didn’t get on the field after latching on with the Lions. The Lions also re-signed exclusive rights free agents LB Zack Follett, OT Corey Hilliard and TE Jake Nordin.

Lions rookie OLB Zack Follett saw some action as a pass-rusher out of the 3-4 set in Sunday’s season finale.
“I think we need to look at that, for sure,” coach Jim Schwartz said of Follett playing outside linebacker. The seventh-rounder will likely be on the roster next season as a special teamer and backup linebacker.
  • CIN Running Back #30
Lions tendered offers to exclusive rights free agents RB Cedric Peerman, LB Zack Follett, OG Corey Hilliard, TE Jake Nordin, and CB DeAngelo Smith.
None of the players are guaranteed to make the final roster in 2010. Peerman, activated from the practice squad in December, didn’t see playing time even with starter Kevin Smith out for the season.
  • DET Linebacker
The Lions didn’t pick up competition for Zack Follett at weak-side linebacker during the draft.
Follett is now the favorite to win the job, though he’ll have to fend off Jordon Dizon and Ashlee Palmer. Follett’s physicality gives him an edge. Middle linebacker DeAndre Levy remains the best bet to lead the Lions in tackles.

The Lions reportedly hope that 2009 seventh-round pick Zack Follett will help fill the void left by Ernie Sims’ trade at outside linebacker.
It’s a nice thought, but unrealistic. Follett is a fine pass rusher with special teams upside, but isn’t remotely cutout to start at weak-side linebacker. The former Cal Bear’s most likely role will be behind SLB Julian Peterson.
