Debbie Phelps texted Michael Phelps about Rio 2016 years ago (video)

After the London Olympic Games in 2012, Michael Phelps was adamant that he would not make a push for Rio in 2016, but from the beginning Debbie Phelps had known competing in 2016 was the right choice for her son.

Debbie Phelps texted her son, Michael, after Rio de Janeiro was awarded the 2016 Olympics in an International Olympic Committe vote Oct. 2, 2009.

“Rio does make sense, in every category,” Debbie Phelps told Ryan Seacrest in an NBC features that aired on the first night of competition during the London 2012 Olympics. “Come on, I want to go to Rio. When they announced Rio, I texted him, I’m like, Michael, 2016, Rio, 50 free, 100 free, just a relay. ... No, mother. I will send you there.”

Of course, Michael Phelps went into the London Olympics saying he would retire after the Games. He did, but re-entered the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency drug testing pool less than one year later and returned to competition in April 2014.

Phelps has committed to making a run for a fifth Olympic team in Rio. If he makes it, he will break his tie with Jason Lezak for the most U.S. Olympic men’s swimming berths.
