18-year-old Mac Bohonnon (pictured) is the lone American in the Sochi Olympics field for men’s aerials, which will set up its final round later today with qualifying at 8:45 a.m. ET on NBCOlympics.com.

Bohonnon, the FIS men’s aerials rookie of the year, got his opportunity to compete in Sochi last month, when an injured teammate was unable to compete at a World Cup event in Quebec.

He promptly flew to Quebec and finished second in the event, and that proved enough to make U.S. coaches put him on the Olympic team as a discretionary selection.

At the time he was notified that he was going to Sochi, he was writing an essay on Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” for his AP English class.
