NOTES AND QUOTES – THE 2022 PRESIDENTS CUP ON NBC, GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (DAY 3)

“I haven’t seen a turnaround like this on foreign soil since Ian Poulter in 2012 and the whole European team…someone said after that Saturday that it felt like a 10-6 tie. This feels like a 11-7 tie.” – Brandel Chamblee on Live From the Presidents Cup

“It’s very important that they don’t leak any more oil. Then the pressure flips onto America in front of the home crowd. Every one of us here thought this was over yesterday…it’s still a huge deficit.” – Paul McGinley on Live From

“Just by himself, he’s worth the price of admission. The ‘Tom Kim Reel’…and it keeps growing.”– Dan Hicks on Tom Kim

“What a late-round charge by the International team. They definitely have a chance. We have a match tomorrow.” – Paul Azinger

STAMFORD, Conn. – Sept. 24, 2022 – NBC Sports presented exclusive coverage of Day 3 of the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., on NBC, GOLF Channel and Peacock, followed by Golf Central Live From The Presidents Cup post-round coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock.

The United States team leads the International team 11 to 7 heading into Sunday’s singles matches. Tomorrow’s Day 4 singles coverage begins at 12 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

Dan Hicks (play-by-play) and Paul Azinger (analyst) led NBC Sports’ coverage, along with holes announcers Justin Leonard and Gary Koch. Roger Maltbie, Notah Begay III, John Wood and Mark Rolfing served as on-course reporters, while Steve Sands, Jimmy Roberts and Kathryn Tappen handled reports and interviews.

Rich Lerner, Brandel Chamblee and Paul McGinley anchored Live From The Presidents Cup post-round coverage with Todd Lewis and Jaime Diaz providing reports. Following are notes and quotes from today’s coverage.

UNITED STATES TEAM

Paul McGinley on Live From: “I’m going to be so interested to see what Davis Love III does…I’ll be really surprised if we don’t see some big names at the top of the American order. They can’t afford to lose any more momentum. They can’t take any risks…it’s very important that they don’t leak any more oil. Then the pressure flips onto America in front of the home crowd. Every one of us thought here thought this was over yesterday.”

Roger Maltbie on Jordan Spieth in four-ball: “Jordan Spieth came up to me after he had his chip conceded (on the 12th hole) and said, ‘Just imagine how good we’d be if we ever hit a fairway.’”

Justin Leonard on the Justin Thomas/Jordan Spieth pairing: “It feels like they’re always 3-up.”

Todd Lewis on Tiger Woods’ involvement: “Tiger is at home in Florida, but his presence is being felt in the United States’ team room…Davis Love III said he is constant communication with Tiger Woods, and Tiger’s also talking to the assistant captains, trying to figure out the proper matchups…if you’re a young player that is experiencing this for the first time…to get a motivational message from the greatest player of this generation has to fire you up.

Begay III on Scottie Scheffler’s shank on the 10th hole: “That, my friends, is a familiar sight at a lot of golf clubs around the country on a Saturday morning.”

INTERNATIONAL TEAM

Tom Kim to Kathryn Tappen following his 1-up four-ball match win: “I had my team behind me…I wanted that putt more than anything in the world...I’m trying to bring energy to the team. That’s the least I can do for the team…we’re on American soil and it’s not easy for us Internationals, so I’m trying to use it as my inspiration.”

Azinger: “What a late-round charge by the International team. They definitely have a chance…that was fun to watch. Now we have a match tomorrow.”

Rich Lerner on Tom Kim on Live From: “U.S. cakewalk? Not on his watch. Breathing life, breathing fire into the underdog…we’ve been wondering for years, who’s the Ian Poulter on the International side? This is what they’ve needed.”

Brandel Chamblee on Live From: “I haven’t seen a turnaround quite like this on foreign soil since Ian Poulter in 2012 and the whole European team…someone said back then after that Saturday that it felt like a 10-6 tie. This feels like a 11-7 tie.”

McGinley on Live From: “It’s still a huge deficit. I’m not dampening it in any way and the last hour was enthralling, but the Americans have been here before. I’ve talked all week about the experience and the good decision-making that’s gone on off the golf course. We’re going to see in the next 24 hours how much work they have done and how much they’ve learned from their lessons. I’ve got a sense that they have, and that Davis (Love III) is going to quash this fire from the Internationals.”

Dan Hicks on Tom Kim’s birdie to win the four-ball match on the 18th hole: “He wanted the big stage, he got it, and he delivered.”

Hicks on Tom Kim’s eagle at the 11th hole in four-ball: “Just by himself, he’s worth the price of admission. The ‘Tom Kim Reel’…and it keeps growing.”

John Wood on Tom Kim: “I’ve never seen a 20-year-old take control of a match like this before. He’s telling him where to hit it, what the read is…the body language and confidence on this kid is incredible.”

Hicks on Kim peeking through his fingers at shots: “He’s like a young kid at a scary movie.”

Hicks on Cam Davis’ birdie on the 18th hole to win four-ball match 1-up: “This Cam from Australia is pretty good, too.”

Begay III on Adam Scott: “He has certainly put on a show today. So solid at the age of 42, demonstrating he still has a lot of game and a lot of stamina.”
