Titans declared QB Rusty Smith, S Chris Hope, CB Chris Hawkins, C Kevin Matthews, T Byron Stingily, DT Zach Clayton, and DT Malcolm Sheppard inactive for Week 5.
The Titans are mostly healthy. Jordan Babineaux gets another start at strong safety, with Hope sidelined. Damian Williams is starting at wide receiver.

According to OC Chris Palmer, Rusty Smith is ahead of Nick Stephens for the team’s No. 3 quarterback job.
With all eyes on the Jake Locker/Matt Hasselbeck competition, Smith and Stephens are competing for one job. Smith, a 2010 sixth-round pick, has the leg up on Stephens, who went undrafted this past April.

Titans will sign QB Rusty Smith off their practice squad.
Instead of adding veteran David Carr, the Titans are going to keep it in-house while Jake Locker (hip, knee) is sidelined. Smith, a 2010 sixth-round pick, does have one NFL start under his belt. He went 17-of-31 for 138 yards with no touchdowns and three picks in a loss at Houston as a rookie.
  • FA Quarterback #8
    Titans released QB Rusty Smith.
The Titans will roll with only Ryan Fitzpatrick behind Jake Locker. During three seasons in Tennessee, Smith appeared in three games. He did make one start make in 2010, going 17-of-31 for 138 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions as part of an ugly loss in Houston.
  • FA Quarterback #8
Rusty Smith will remain the No. 2 quarterback despite the addition of John Skelton.
Skelton was signed as mere insurance just in case one of Ryan Fitzpatrick or Smith goes down. It’s perhaps the least talented quarterback room in the entire NFL right now.

Free agent QB Rusty Smith visited with the Giants on Friday.
Smith spent last season as Tennessee’s third-string quarterback and hasn’t appeared in a game since 2012. He could provide insurance behind Ryan Nassib if signed. The Giants are Smith’s only known visit of free agency.
  • FA Quarterback #8
    Giants signed QB Rusty Smith.
The Giants continue to add camp arms as Eli Manning rehabs from ankle surgery. Smith slides in behind Josh Freeman, Curtis Painter and Ryan Nassib. He’s started one game since the Titans selected him in the sixth round of the 2010 draft.
  • FA Quarterback #8
Free agent QB Rusty Smith worked out for the Saints.
The Saints have already re-signed backup QB Luke McCown, so Smith would just be a camp body. A 2010 sixth-rounder, Smith has attempted only 45 regular-season passes, posting a 29.3 QB rating in the process.
  • FA Quarterback #8
Giants waived/released QB Rusty Smith, LB Allen Bradford, CB Junior Mertile and P Jordan Gay.
Smith made it just two weeks in the Big Apple. A 2010 sixth-rounder, Smith has attempted only 45 career passes, 40 of which came in 2010. He’s nearing the end of the line. Bradford appeared in nine games for the Giants last season, registering four tackles.

Titans selected Florida Atlanta QB Rusty Smith with the No. 176 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Smith offers ideal size at 6'5/230 and was once an emerging sleeper prospect, but his senior season ended with a sprained ACL joint in his shoulder after just seven games. The most decorated player in Florida Atlantic history, Smith finished his career with a 76:36 TD-to-INT ratio, but just a 19-18 record and seemed to regress after earning Sun Belt Player of the Year honors in 2007. In Tennessee, he’ll have a chance at a roster spot if he pushes Chris Simms off the roster, or overpaid Kerry Collins is cut.
