There’s an American player on Sunderland in the news today, and it’s not new loan acquisition DeAndre Yedlin.
Lynden Gooch is the name, fresh off a few appearances on the subs’ bench for Dick Advocaat’s Black Cats, and the 19-year-old U.S. U-23 midfielder has been given the title of Barclays U-21 Player of the Month for August.

Gooch may be the next U.S. player to break through to Premier League mainstay status, but his impact for the Sunderland U-21s is impressive. He scored in all three U-21 fixtures last month.
From SAFC.com:“It’s great, when I saw Duncan (Watmore) win the award last year I really wanted to get one of my own so I’m buzzing.
“I’ve had a great start; last season was frustrating for me because I had a few injuries so it was important to get off to a good start this year, and I came back really fit for pre-season which I think has really paid off.”
That’s Lyndon Gooch, not Oguchi Onyewu (who’s obviously not a teen). The name is bound to become more familiar as we approach the Olympics. Keep an eye on No. 46 in the red and white stripes before he pulls on the red, white and blue.
