Another Aubameyang hat-trick puts Dortmund ace at 13 goals
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to score in a Bundesliga match for the first time this season last weekend in a 2-0 win over FC Mainz (he assisted both goals). No worries, he’ll make up for it next time.
Make up for it he did he did, with a hat-trick Sunday against FC Augsburg in a 5-1 win for Borussia Dortmund. The three goals give him 13 on the Bundesliga season, tied atop the goalscoring charts with Robert Lewandowski through 10 league matches.
The haul also gives Aubameyang six goals in his last two matches across all competitions, having bagged a hat-trick midweek against Azerbaijani club FK Gabala in Europa League play. The 26-year-old now has 20 goals in 18 matches across all competitions this season, three more than Lewandowski from four more matches played than the Polish striker.
Aubameyang’s league goalscoring has him on pace to break the Bundesliga goalscoring record set by Gerd Muller in 1972 when he bagged a blistering 40 Bundesliga goals that season. As of now, Aubameyang is on pace for 42.5 goals.
His fantastic finishing has Borussia Dortmund set for a return to the Champions League after a year away. Unfortunately, they’ll need another man to support Aubameyang in front of goal if they are to challenge Bayern Munich’s total dominance for the top - Dortmund’s next leading scorer is Henrikh Mkhitaryan with four, while Bayern has 10 from Muller right behind Lewandowski’s total. Nevertheless, it’s been fun to watch at Westfalenstadion, and it promises to be that way for the remainder of the season.
