Atletico Madrid admits a desire to buy back Diego Costa from Chelsea
Diego Costa and his antics are welcome at the Vicente Calderon.
The big Brazilian striker’s breakout performance at Atletico Madrid in 2013-14 earned him a big money move to Chelsea, where he helped the Blues to the Premier League title with 20 goals in 26 PL matches.
Yet it’s been pretty downhill for the striker since that big PL debut season, with both club and country failing to see regular star performances. And Atleti president Enrique Cerezo admitted that the club tried to bring him back this summer, and will look to do so again in the future. From Sky Sports:
“We will try everything possible and see what Chelsea say, but it doesn’t depend solely on us,” Cerezo told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.
“We always try to bring the best players and Diego is one of them.”
Costa, 27, has looked limited this season, and has been a flop in the UEFA Champions League for two consecutive years, knocking in just one goal in 13 matches.
While there’s still time to fix that, surely the big man is daydreaming about Atleti as much as the club thinks about him. With Jackson Martinez sold to Guangzhou Evergrande for crazy money, the club has the money to spend and a need at striker.
