There weren’t any goals in Tuesday’s dull UEFA Champions League draw between Bayern Munich and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine, but Bayern scores some major points for what they’re doing in the war-torn country.

As you’ll recall, the match was moved from Shakhtar to Lviv. And Bayern and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge delivered a world class gift to the hard-hit people where the match was staged.

From the Bayern Munich web site:

First, FC Bayern will cover the costs of hospital stays and medicines to enable vital operations to be performed on children in Ukraine. “These sorts of occasions make you understand what’s really important in life,” said Rummenigge: “We don’t think twice about getting involved when it comes to helping children lead a normal life.” Hopfner said it was “extremely important” to provide help in this situation.

The donation from FC Bayern Hilfe eV has enabled a volunteer German doctor to perform 60 operations. FCB have also donated anaesthesia equipment for the intensive care unit after the hospital’s previous equipment recently broke down. The charity event was set up by the Big Shoe organisation founded by an FC Bayern member in 2006. 900 operations have been performed worldwide to date.

Cheers to the Bavarians, and cheers to the commenter who pointed out this story to us!
