With Liverpool down in 10th place on 22 points from 17 games, the following comments from their manager Brendan Rodgers could seem a little outlandish.

Rodgers watched on as his side dominated Arsenal but once again failed to be clinical as they snatched a late 2-2 draw at Anfield against the Gunners.

Yes, they deserved that point, but the Reds are currently 18 points off leaders Chelsea and Manchester City and there is no talk of a title charge this season. However when asked after the draw against Arsenal on Sunday, Rodgers does believe his side can still finish in the top four.

“Can we now challenge for the top four? Yes. Absolutely. The most important thing is that we are moving in the right direction again,” Rodgers said."This a group of players with the talent to win games, as we did when we won 11 in succession last season, and that can quickly move you up the league.”

Okay, Rodgers has got confidence in his side and striker Daniel Sturridge will return from injury in January to bolster their attacking options. So, there is hope. But can the Reds really finish in the top six?

Here’s a stat for you: no team who has accumulated 21 points in their first 17 games of a PL season has ever finished higher than sixth place in the final standings.

So, Liverpool have to rewrite history to finish in the top four and they currently sit 10 points off West Ham who occupy fourth.

With a new three-man defense and the likes of Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana creating plenty of chances, can Liverpool make an incredible charge in the second half of the season to secure Champions League soccer returns to Anfield next season?
