Chelsea agree deal to re-sign David Luiz from PSG

David Luiz returns to Chelsea for around $40 million after leaving the club back in 2014 to go to PSG for a fee of $65 million.

“The geezer” is back.

A deal which seemed unthinkable yesterday is done. David Luiz is heading back to Chelsea.

Luiz, 29, has been seen in and around London on Transfer Deadline Day and his move from Paris Saint-Germain is close to completion.

In a brief statement on their website, Chelsea confirmed a deal to buy back Luiz from PSG has been agreed.

“Chelsea Football Club and Paris Saint-Germain have agreed terms for the transfer of David Luiz back to London. The move is now subject to him agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.”

Luiz left Chelsea for PSG in 2014 for $65 million and it is believed that Chelsea are paying just under $40 million to buy the flamboyant defender back.

A fans favorite at Stamford Bridge, Luiz will certainly add quality and depth to Antonio Conte’s defensive options -- as will Marcos Alonso who signed from Fiorentina for $30 million on Deadline Day -- although many have questioned his defensive capabilities.

He flourished at times in a holding midfield role which let him show off his wide-range of passing and his last spell at Chelsea he became a magician from free kicks, regularly spanking in dipping, swerving efforts from long range.

Luiz divides opinion among most Chelsea fans but most will agree that Conte needed extra defensive cover and a player who knows the club inside out is back in west London two years after leaving for PSG.
