Dortmund’s star defender Mats Hummels to miss 3 weeks with foot injury

Hummels

Times are tough at Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.

Despite some success in this year’s Champions League, Die Schwarzgelben have dropped seven of 10 league games and are in somewhat of a crisis situation in 16th position in the Bundesliga table.

Now, it appears they will need to turn things around without their captain and World Cup star, defender Mats Hummels. He picked up a foot/ankle injury in the derby loss to Bayern Munich and will be out for around three weeks to a month.

Thankfully for the club, the layoff includes a two-week international break so he won’t miss much in terms of club matches, but he won’t make Champions League matches against Galatasaray and Arsenal.

It also means he won’t be available during the international break for his country, and will miss Germany’s Euro qualifier against Gibraltar and a friendly with Spain.

Hummels oddly was not in the team for Dortmund’s only two league wins this season, having missed out on the start of the season due to a knee injury. Those matches he missed included wins over Augsburg and Freiburg, while Dortmund has picked up just one single point in the six matches since his return. Hummels also missed the home Champions League win over Arsenal.
