Galaxy GK Penedo wins individual honor as four clinch Gold Cup berths
Los Angeles Galaxy and Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo was hoping for both club and country glory with last week’s Copa CentroAmericana leading into the stretch run for Major League Soccer.
Panama’s third-place finish means he’ll have to hope for the MLS Cup if he wants team honors this year, but individual acclaim has come his way. Penedo’s been named the tournament’s goalkeeper of the tournament.
Costa Rica won the tournament for the eighth time, defeating Guatemala in the final. Panama and fourth-place finisher El Salvador join them as clubs to qualify for the 2015 Gold Cup. Fifth-place Honduras will vie for a place in the Gold Cup with the fifth-place team from the 2014 Caribbean Cup.
The Caribbean Cup will be contested from Nov. 9-18 after qualifying finishes up Oct. 8-12. Only Cuba and Jamaica have clinched spots in the Caribbean Cup.
As for more on Penedo:From L.A. Galaxy Insider with Adam Serrano:
Penedo was awarded the tournament’s Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper after conceding just two goals during Panama’s three games. Panama finished the tournament in third place after defeating El Salvador 1-0 in the third place match on Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The award comes on the heels of Penedo’s Golden Gloves showing at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup when Penedo was instrumental in Panama’s run to the final. By finishing in the CentroAmericana’s top four spots, Panama earned a berth in the 2015 edition of the Gold Cup.
