Is Fredy Montero finally for real?

Seattle Sounders v Real Salt Lake

Two weeks ago, Jonah Freedman wrote a highly critical (and, if you ask us, highly accurate) column on MLSSoccer.com titled “Time for Montero to step up and be the man.” Your takeaway paragraph:

At what point do we start to look at Montero and start demanding more from him on his own? When can we start requiring his own greatness to shine through? We’ll look the other way on some of the histrionics and choice words for the officials – plenty of players do that – but for Fredy to truly be great, he needs to take responsibility for his own all-around game.

You could be one of the best, Fredy. Now make us believe the hype.

Was Fredy listening?

He came off the bench over the weekend to score against the New York Red Bulls, which almost seemed ordained if you listen to Twitter. The forward did himself one better, netting against Chelsea on Wednesday night. It wasn’t a brilliant effort -- although it was a calm strike -- but it was a goal against one of the world’s best teams. (Bonus from Joshua Meyers: “Fredy Montero is the first Sounder to score against a major European friendly opponent. Seattle had been outscored 15-0 prior.”)

More to the point, it came when his team most needed him. They were getting run off the field, already down 2-0. Montero stole the ball and finished cleanly and effectively. All of a sudden, the Sounders looked like they started to believe. Sure, it’s just an exhibition, but it’s good to see Montero put a charge into his club. And you have to love the relationship he seems to be developing with Eddie Johnson.

Chelsea goal isn’t up yet, but would you take one scored from Tacoma?

UPDATE: And there’s another one. Bang, bang.
