Twenty-seven years after his first stint with Gremio, Luis Felipe Scolari is returning to the Brazilian side as its new manager. It will be the third time he’s managed the Porto Alegre club, having first coached there in 1987 followed by a three year stint from 1993-1996.
It’s a swift return to management for the 65-year-old, who resigned as Brazil manager following the Selecao’s 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the third-place match of the 2014 World Cup.
That defeat capped what was a depressing performance for Brazil in their home soil, having suffered a 7-1 shellacking at the hands of Germany in the semifinals.
Gremio announced the hiring over Twitter on Tuesday, saying: “Luiz Felipe Scolari returns as Gremio coach. He returns to the Tricolor after 18 years. Welcome, Scolari!

Bem-vindo, Felipão!
In his second stint with the club, from 1993-1996, Scolari lead Gremio to six titles including a Copa Libertadores victory in 1995 and a Brazilian Championship in 1996.
