The game in 100 words (or less): The Portland Timbers’ lead on the Seattle Sounders was cut to three points earlier Saturday afternoon, putting the pressure squarely on Caleb Porter’s side with the Philadelphia Union visiting Providence Park. Their response: a 2-1 victory via a pair of assists from Darren Mattocks, each one poked home by Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi. All three goals were scored in a eight-minute period to begin the second half, with Chris Pontius briefly pulling the Union back onto level terms. The victory pushes Portland (41 points) past Sporting Kansas City for fifth in the Western Conference, now six points clear of the Sounders and seven ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Three moments that mattered

46' — Valeri pokes home Mattocks’ cross for 1-0 — Mattocks did extremely well to keep the ball in play, turn on the end line, create space to dribble into, and pick out Valeri inside the six-yard box.

47' — Pontius hits right back for Philly — Right place, right time for Pontius.

53' — Adi redirectes Mattocks’ shot for 2-1 — Mattocks was going for goal, without question, but Adi’s poacher’s instincts took over to give the Timbers a winner.
