The game in 100 words (or less): In a huge match in the Western Conference playoff battle, the Portland Timbers claimed all three points with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake. Fanendo Adi’s penalty kick was enough to push Portland into the sixth and final playoff spot in the West, now three points ahead of the San Jose Earthquakes. With a match against the lowly Colorado Rapids remaining, the Timbers are now in a prime position to qualify for the playoffs. For RSL, they’re technically still alive, but need help from other teams.

Three moments that mattered

28' -- Alvas Powell gets yellow card for Portland -- Alvas Powell was shown a yellow card for a first half foul on Juan Manuel Martinez. This means that Powell will be suspended for Portland’s next match against LA, which could clinch them a playoff berth. The 21-year-old defender has started 30 matches on the Timbers back-line, so it’s a big loss for Caleb Porter’s side.

52' -- Jamison Olave sees straight red for RSL -- Real Salt Lake’s Jamison Olave was sent off for a last man tackle on Lucas Melano. Melano used his speed to breeze by the RSL defense, and was taken down from behind by Olave as he reached the penalty area. An easy call for referee Juan Guzman.

54' -- Fanendo Adi buries the ensuing penalty -- After Melano was fouled, Fanendo Adi stepped up for Portland to take the ensuing penalty kick. Nick Rimando guessed the wrong way as Adi gave Portland a crucial lead.
