MLS Snapshot: Toronto FC 3-1 Philadelphia Union

Jozy Altidore, Facundo Coria

Jozy Altidore, Toronto FC

The game in 100 words (or less): Following a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, Toronto FC have an eight-point cushion (with no more games in hand) on seventh-place Orlando City SC in their bid to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in club history. Sebastian Giovinco scored (dubiously) on the afternoon to take his total for the season up to 21 goals, one behind Kei Kamara in the race for the MLS Golden Boot. Jozy Altidore also got himself on the scoresheet seven days ahead of the U.S. national team’s CONCACAF Cup showdown with Mexico, surely a pleasing sign for USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. With three games left in the regular season, TFC could finish as high as first in the Eastern Conference, though the conference-leading New York Red Bulls hold a two-point lead on TFC with two games in hand.

Three moments that mattered

28' — Giovinco’s deflected FK finds twine — Giovinco doesn’t exactly need help scoring goals these days, but he’ll certainly take assistance if you’re offering. Raymon Gaddis was the unlucky man whose backside sent Giovinco’s free kick looping high into the air and on goal. Andre Blake could do little about it as the ball nestled itself inside the far post.

63' — Altidore finishes from close range, 2-0 to TFC — He should have never been allowed to bring the ball down and control it with his foot from this sort of range, but it was just one of those days for Ray Gaddis. Nice first touch, nice comopsure, nice finish from Jozy.

66' — Vitoria heads home to cut the lead in half — Cristian Maidana dropped a perfectly weighted free kick onto the head of Steven Vitoria three minutes later to give the visitors a merciful consolation goal.
