Monday’s Transfer Rumor Roundup: Eto’o, Welbeck to Everton? Gustavo to Arsenal?

Welbeck

With just one week to go until the summer transfer window slams shut, here is you latest dose of transfer gossip.

Everton could be set to bolster their forward line considerably as boss Roberto Martinez refused to rule out a move for free agent and former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Barcelona forward Samuel Eto’o. The Cameroon international, 33, is available on a free after failing to find a club since his one-year deal at Chelsea came to an end back in May. With his vast experience around European soccer’s top leagues, Eto’o would certainly add experience to the Toffees’ front line and be a key player alongside Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith. The Daily Mirror believe Eto’o could arrive shortly after Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign him.

If that deal doesn’t work out, there are also rumors circulating that Manchester United and England forward Danny Welbeck could be heading to Goodison Park. Welbeck, 23, has apparently been told he’s surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and with Angel Di Maria set to arrive from Real Madrid, Welbeck will fall further down the pecking order in the coming days. A move to Everton, even if it’s initially a loan deal, could suit all parties.

Arsenal could be in line to bring Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo to the Emirates from Bundesliga side Woflsburg. Former Bayern Munich star Gustavo, 27, almost joined Arsenal last summer but the Gunners couldn’t guarantee him regular playing time. According to the Daily Mirror, Arsene Wenger apparently sent scouts to watch Gustavo during Wolfsburg’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich and is worried about Mikel Arteta’s injury and Mathieu Flamini’s slow start to the season. Lukas Podolski could be included on a player-swap plus cash deal for Gustavo.

According to the Sun, Southampton are set to renew their interest in Norwich City winger Nathan Redmond. The young English attacker, 20, is currently playing in the second-tier with the Canaries but Saints boss Ronald Koeman is desperate to grab a pacey winger to bolster his sides offensive output. Koeman repeated that belief following Saints’ 0-0 draw with West Brom on Saturday and Redmond could be available for $16 million. The England U-21 international had a great start to last season at Carrow Road but his form petered off as injuries hit and the Canaries were eventually relegated.

Finally, reports from the Daily Express suggest Sunderland have spoken with former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou about a move to the Stadium of Light. Ivory Coast international Kalou, 29, is currently playing for French side Lille but after a productive campaign in Ligue 1 last season (scoring 16 goals) the attacker wants a move back to the Premier League. Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton are said to be monitoring the situation closely but reports suggest a switch to Sunderland is more likely.
