A goal fit to win any game settled matters at St. James’ Park on Saturday, as Hull City beat Newcastle United 3-2.
In the 75th minute Hull’s Sone Aluko smashed home a sumptuous volley that grabbed all three points for the Tigers, after Loic Remy had twice given Newcastle the lead in the first half.
The home side will be disappointed that they couldn’t at least grab a point following a terrific first half display, however, Hull looked lively on the break and gave the Magpies problems all afternoon.
Things started off so well for the North East club, as on loan French striker Remy opened his Newcastle account in the 10th minute with a header. Moussa Sissoko whipped the ball in and Papiss Demba Cisse hit his shot into the ground and Remy followed up.
But in the 26th minute, Hull City equalized after Mathieu Debuchy was caught out of position at right back. Hull’s striker Aluko found Robbie Brady on the inside left and he drove a low shot between the goalkeepers legs and into the net.
However, just when Hull thought they got a foothold, Remy reacted instinctively after a long shot was blocked and the French international forward doubled his tally for the afternoon in the 44th minute, to make it 2-1.
The scoring was far from over, as half time proved only to be a brief respite from the end-to-end action.
Just after the break, Hull City fought back once more as Ahmed Elmohamady scored from a great cross from Tom Huddelstone on the left hand side in the 48th minute. Elmohamady had plenty of time and space to finish after being left unmarked by Newcastle, as Hull made it 2-2.
And then came the game-winning moment, as Aluko smashed home an unstoppable volley in the 75th minute, to seal a vital win for the Tigers, and halt Newcastle’s recent good form.
The win lifts Hull to tenth in the table, level on points with Newcastle who also have seven points from their opening five games.
