A little social media brush fire over the new Miami expansion outfit was promptly, mercifully extinguished Wednesday. So for the record: No, the MLS team being assembled on the hurry-up down in South Florida will not be known as Miami Beckham United.
Please join me in saying, “praise be.”
Wednesday morning word circulated through the interwebs that Beckham’s business handlers had registered Miami Beckham United LLC. People started adding two plus two ... but coming up with “five.”
As anyone who has ever started their own little widget shop will tell you, registering a limited liability company is just a government hoop to jump. I can register “Yummy-Tummy-Yummy” today and then open a restaurant called something completely different (“I Like Tacos!”) from there.
So, that was probably never a threat to become reality. Either way, we all came in off the ledge on that one by afternoon.
Meanwhile …
Seattle made another move Wednesday (busy, busy, busy days around CenturyLink, no?) as yesterday’s DP Mauro Rosales (pictured above) was sent to Chivas USA for Tristan Bowen’s rights and – here’s the proverbial other cleat falling – the No. 2 spot in MLS allocation order. Hmmmm. Could Seattle know something about who might soon be available in that allocation process?
Yes, those hangovers from MLS Cup revelry are just now abating, but teams are already beginning to reveal their preseason plans. (Remember, we told you it wouldn’t be long before we started seeing these MLS clubs again.) The Columbus Crew, for instance, announced they will launch their first camp under new coach Gregg Berhalter on Jan. 24.

Speaking of the bunch from Gillette: Now back among the playoff-worthy and hoping to fortify the roster so they can stay there, New England picked up goalkeeper Brad Knighton in a trade with Vancouver. The move was important for Jay Heaps’ team given Matt Reis’ retirement announcement. So Knighton, who started with the Revs, will compete with Bobby Shuttleworth for starting duty next year at Gillette.
North and west of there, Portland will hold its next Rose City Invitational from Feb. 23 to March 1. San Jose Earthquakes, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Jamaican club Portmore United FC will join Caleb Porter’s host club.
