Norwich City 1-0 Southampton: Tettey wins it late on

  • Tettey’s drive wins it
  • Wanyama sent off
  • Norwich now one point behind Saints

Norwich City beat 10-man Southampton 1-0 at Carrow Road on Saturday with Alexander Tettey’s cool finish grabbing all three points.

Southampton and Norwich traded plenty of chances throughout the game but just three minutes after Victor Wanyama was sent off for two bookable offences, Norwich made their numerical advantage count and continue their recent good form.

With the win Norwich now have 23 points which takes them just one point behind a Southampton side sliding down the table after seven defeats in their last nine games.

Saints started the brighter of the two teams and Shane Long headed a looping cross just over as Declan Rudd came flapping and got nowhere near the ball.

Norwich grew into the game Jonny Howson latched onto a bouncing ball after getting the best of Jose Fonte but sent his effort just wide.

Before half time both teams had chances with James Ward-Prowse sending a tame effort in on goal and Dieumerci Mbokani almost bundling home a deflected cross from Russell Martin.

Long then had a fantastic chance to give Saints the lead but Rudd smothered his effort and then Long forced Rudd into another save from his header from the resulting corner. The chances kept coming in the first half with Jordy Clasie forcing Rudd into a fine stop and Mbokani poking another cross just over.

In the second half Norwich put plenty of pressure on Southampton’s goal with set pieces flying in from every angle but the Canaries couldn’t quite get on the end of a string of dangerous deliveries.

With 17 minutes to go Saints were reduced to 10-men as Wanyama was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle on substitute Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe and Norwich then laid siege to the Southampton goal in the closing stages.

Odjidja-Ofoe then teed up Tettey for the game-winning goal as the Norwegian midfielder slotted home into the top corner to give the Canaries all three points and pull them further away from the bottom three.
