USA 1-0 France — FULL RECAP
Carli Lloyd scored the game’s only goal, her second of the tournament. The USWNT struggled mightily to a 0-0 deadlock at halftime before rebounding and enjoying a period of dominance in the second half that eventually produced the game-winner. With the victory, the Yanks are officially through to the quarterfinals, and can clinch the top spot in Group G with a draw or victory over Colombia in their group-stage finale on Tuesday (6 p.m. ET — Watch live on NBCSN and NBCOlympics.com).
Brazil 5-1 Sweden
Marta and Beatriz each scored twice for the hosts, who like their male counterparts are chasing a first-ever Olympic gold medal, and doing so on home soil. Cristiane, who tallied in Brazil’s opening victory over China, scored the other. All three of Saturday’s scorers have two goals thus far this tournament. The victory puts Brazil through to the quarterfinals and a draw or victory over South Africa (Tuesday, 9 p.m. ET) away from finishing in the top spot.
Canada 3-1 Zimbabwe
Canada (6 points) grabbed a resounding victory over Zimbabwe to put themselves in pole position to finish top of Group F with a draw or victory over Germany when the two sides meet in the group finale on Tuesday (3 p.m. ET). Doing so could set the Canadians up with an easier matchup in the quarterfinals. Christine Sinclair scored for the second time these Olympics, and Janine Beckie bagged a brace to push her into the lead for the Golden Boot (3 goals scored).
Germany 2-2 Australia
The door was left wide open for Canada to win the group with a draw against Germany, thanks to the Germans’ draw with Australia. Down 2-0 with 45 minute on the clock, Germany (4 points) pulled one back in first-half stoppage (Sara Daebritz) time and eventually rescued a point with an 88th-minute equalizer (Saskia Bartusiak).
