After a scoreless first half, Peru got on the board immediately after the break off a corner kick. Paraguay failed to clear the box and a bouncing ball fell to Andre Carrillo at the top of the box. Falling backwards, Carrillo was able to get enough power on his volley to beat Justo Villar in net.
Peru had 11 corners in the match compared to Paraguay’s three, which is an indicator of how much more attack Peru was able to create.
Paolo Guerrero sealed the deal for Peru in the 89th minute, scoring on a counter-attack as Paraguay had pushed everyone forward. Joel Sanchez made a streaking run down the right flank and crossed into the box where Peru had numbers, and Guerrero slotted home to clinch third place.
