Manchester United may well be making a late surge up the Premier League table this season, but Louis van Gaal’s boys are already lining up plenty of new additions for this summer as they aim to challenge for the title and impress back in the UEFA Champions League next season.

According to the Technical Director of recently crowned Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, the Red Devils have made an inquiry about winger Memphis Depay. PSV’s Marcel Brands confirmed that United have been in touch about Depay and the former Tottenham Hotspur target, who had a pricetag of around $22 million last summer, could fetch double that amount over the offseason.
“It’s true there has been contact with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain and a third, big European club,” Brands said. “But this time we are talking about bigger amounts of money.”
Depay, 21, played for current United boss LVG while he was coaching the Dutch national team at the World Cup in 2014 and the tricky winger has been instrumental in helping PSV to the Eredivsie crown and has scored 20 goals in 26 league games this season.
The only questions is, where would he play for United?
Right now a 4-1-4-1 formation seems to working rather well at Old Trafford with Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young making up the four attacking midfield positions to support Wayne Roney. Does LVG really need to focus on offensive additions while his backline has often been full of youngsters or midfielders playing out of position? On top of that, wingers Adnan Januzaj and Angel di Maria are struggling to get a start, as United are stacked with wingers and they will have another option next season if they buy a new right back and Antonio Valencia moves back to his preferred role as a right winger. So, United have made the initial contact but will PSV stand in Depay’s way this summer if his old boss comes calling?
