Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez says “there’s a chance” he stays on with the Magpies after their relegation to the Championship, and that his meetings with managing director Lee Charnley have been good so far.

“We have to talk and we have more meetings then we will see what happens,” Benitez said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle’s season finale against Tottenham. “If I’m here and discussing it, it’s because there is a chance, we have to keep talking.”

“We have a good relationship,” Benitez continued, speaking of himself and Charnley. “He is professional and so I am. We first have analyzed what went wrong. But the meetings were quite positive. We will continue. If I decide to come here it’s because it’s a massive club and we have the fans. I am flattered with them. There will be more meetings.”

“We need a structure to allow the club to compete. I am happy to discuss all of these things. I am pleased with the first conversation.”

Benitez also confirmed he has not spoken with any other clubs after his name was mentioned as a possibility for the Everton job.
