Long-linked with Premier League clubs, Real Madrid has sent defender Fabio Coentrao to a team they can’t face in the UEFA Champions League.

With AS Monaco eliminated from the competition after Tuesday’s match with Valencia, Madrid has allowed the highlight-haired defender to move to Ligue 1 for the season.

The 27-year-old Portuguese was a near-miss transfer for David Moyes’ Manchester United in 2013, and he’s been linked with any number of Premier League powers since becoming unsettled at Real Madrid.

Coentrao has 50 caps for Portugal with five goals, and has seen his RM appearances drop from 33 to 17 over four years at the Bernabeu.
