With a 2-1 victory over Malaga on Saturday, Real Madrid set a new club record for most successive wins — a staggering 16 straight games across all competitions without defeat — breaking a record that stood since the 1960-61 season and remained still intact when equalled in 2011-12.
Not that you need reminding, but now’s probably a good time to point out that breaking club records at a club like Real Madrid is nothing to glance over and take for granted. When a Real Madrid club record falls, you can be sure you’re watching true greatness. It also means that it’s never been done before, and when speaking of a club with Real Madrid’s 112-year history, that too is saying something significant.
During the 16-game run, Los Merengues have defeated their opponents by an even more staggering combined score of 59-11.
But perhaps most staggering thing about Saturday’s win was that Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score a goal for only the second time all season, and the first in La Liga action. Though, the Portuguese star did pick up a pair of assists on Madrid’s two goals. So the shoo-in Ballon d’Or winner wasn’t a total waste of space.
