Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco, who made shockwaves this past winter when he moved from Juventus to Major League Soccer in the prime of his career, is becoming somewhat of an ambassador for the league already.
With fellow Italian Andrea Pirlo widely reported to be signing with New York City FC, Giovinco says his former Juventus teammate contacted him about what life in MLS is like.
In an interview with Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport, Giovinco says Pirlo left him a message a while ago, saying, “He asked me a while ago how I was and how things are here. I told him that playing in MLS is a great experience, something he should try.”
While Giovinco says he doesn’t believe he alone convinced Pirlo to join Major League Soccer, he does believe that his move should be replicated by other European stars because the league is a quality destination and continues to grow in reputation.
Giovinco’s move to Toronto has been a sweeping success so far, with the 28-year-old scoring eight goals in 14 matches so far, and while the development of local talent is nice, he believes the removal of the salary cap would make it easier for other top players to make the switch to North America. “They should change some rules to facililate the arrival of more players from abroad, like the salary cap.”
“I have no regrets whatsoever that I left Juventus for Toronto,” the Italian insisted.
We all know it’s not that easy, but we’ll give Sebastian a pass for simply wanting more top talent in the league.
