The FA has let Sergio Aguero off the hook for his two-footed tackle on David Luiz during Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.
The 24 year old Aguero scored the goal that confirmed City’s place in the FA Cup final with a stunning cross-goal header shortly after half time. But the striker was criticised for a challenge on Luiz in the 82nd minute which seemingly went unpunished by referee Chris Foy.
Shortly following a play where Luiz appeared to elbow Aguero, the two were vying for a 50-50 ball when both players went to ground. The City striker came down second and with it brought a two-footed stamp to Luiz’ backside. Referee Chris Foy awarded Chelsea a free-kick and while it was unclear if this was for the preceding tangle with Luiz or Aguero’s clash, the FA today deemed it to have been the later meaning they will not review the matter.
If the incident transpired off the ball and away from Foy’s field of vision then Aguero would be more likely to have to answer for his actions. Nevertheless, the FA ruling will stand and means that El Kun has escaped a potential three match ban, which would have seen him miss City’s next three league matches against Wigan, Tottenham and West Ham.
City currently sit 2nd in the table, 15 points south of Manchester United and six points clear of 3rd place Arsenal.
