Southampton 4-0 Newcastle: Pelle bags brace as Saints swarm struggling Newcastle (video)

Pelle, Tadic, Mane, Forster, Bertrand and more. Saints spent wisely over the summer.

Southampton defended their home turf with ease in a 3-0 win as calls for Alan Pardew’s head rung loud from visiting fans.

Summer signing Graziano Pelle scored a pair inside the first 20 minutes as Southampton showed no struggles against the Magpies, who are winless on the year.

Southampton went up early - just six minutes in - and sent the visiting fans into despair as Graziano Pelle rose to head home a cross from Ryan Bertrand off a throw in.

The Saints held much of the possession in the first 15 minutes, and while Newcastle enjoyed some joy down their right flank, it was the home side that struck again for an early 2-goal lead.

New boy Pelle again picked up the score as he played a one-two with Dusan Tadic before getting the ball back with nobody there to defend and the touch past Krul was far too easy just before the 20 minute mark.

Newcastle had their best chance of the game when Moussa Sissokho tested Fraser Forster with a sizzling low shot but the goalkeeper was up to the task and Sissokho’s volley attempt on the rebound was a whiff.

Southampton saw the first half out solidly, but after the break things got a bit sloppy on both sides, but they’d quickly put it behind them and turn the scoreboard yet again.

Midfielder Steven Davis found Jack Cork streaking through the middle, and Newcastle showed they may be relegation quality. Miscommunication between Krul and defender Michael Williamson saw the ball slide through to Cork and Krul found himself well out of the goal, and when Cork touched past the keeper there was no stopping the midfielder from slotting home Southampton’s third.

It appeared that Williamson may have thought Davis’s ball was too long for Cork, and it was too late once he realized it was in fact perfect. Krul came out of his goal to cover, but thought Williamson would recover, so he stopped in no-man’s land.

Newcastle continued to hold possession but could do nothing with it, producing just four shots as Southampton continued to prove dangerous on the break.

They would cap a fantastic day at St. Mary’s off as Morgan Schneiderlin curled in an effort from stoppage time to continue his surprisingly outstanding start to the season, his third score of the year.

The win for Southampton puts them up to seven points, good enough for third place in the table, a fantastic start for a club criticized in the offseason for selling many of its best players. Meanwhile, Newcastle remains bottom of the table with just two points on the year and no wins.
