Continuing with the theme of crazy events in the world of sports this week, QPR defender Steven Caulker was handcuffed and wrongly accused of stealing a tub of Philadelphia cream cheese.
The incident occurred at a Tesco Express store in Weybridge, Surrey, on Tuesday just days after Caulker scored in the 2-2 draw with Stoke City. Witnesses to the incident claim that Caulker left the store and was heading back inside with the tub of cream cheese in hand when police arrived on the scene and put him in handcuffs.
“Police were called after an allegation of shoplifting last Tuesday,"a Tesco spokesman said. “The matter was resolved at the store and our store colleagues decided not to press charges.”
Caulker appeared “pretty alarmed” but was set free after a short discussion with police confirmed that no crime had been committed and being told there was confusion between the staff about payment.
While it’s great to see Caulker come out on the right side of this incident it’s hard not to note that this is yet another odd shoplifting incident to come out of a Tesco Extra. In 2011, David de Gea was alleged to have entered a Tesco Extra in Manchester, lifted a Krispy Kreme donut and eaten it in the aisle before walking out without paying.
