PST’s Top 20 World Cup moments – No. 8: Iniesta’s kick bests De Jong’s ‘karate kick’ to give Spain its first World Cup
In a World Cup final that seemed destined for penalty kicks, Spain’s Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta took destiny into their own hands.
With four minutes left in the second period of extra time, Fabregas turned an errant cross from Fernando Torres into the assist that would win World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The Spanish midfielder found Iniesta, who fired past Edwin van der Sar to all-but-clinch the tournament.

It wasn’t a Golden Goal, but it was close. And perhaps fitting seeing as Howard Webb should’ve given a red card to Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong for his “karate kick” on Xabi Alonso earlier in the match.
De Jong’s disgusting effort was only given a yellow, showing that Webb has seen the foul. It was even ridiculous given the player’s poor reputation, but fortunately justice prevailed in the end as de Jong would not kiss the cup.
