Tottenham to sign Erik Lamela from Roma for $45 million
On Wednesday AS Roma announced on their website that striker Erik Lamela will join Tottenham Hotspur in a deal that could be worth over $45 million.
Seems like Spurs have lined up their replacement for Gareth Bale, as their summer of spending continues.
Argentine international Lamela, 23, has been a sensation in the Eternal City since joining Roma for $22.5 million in 2011 from River Plate.
Affectionately known as ‘Coco’ in his homeland, the attacker is renowned for his blistering pace and dribbling skills that leave opposition defenders bamboozled. Sound familiar?
The winger will be a replacement for Bale and should thrive in Tottenham’s approach of pushing forward at pace, which will enable Lamela to pounce to get in behind the defense with his trademark darting runs. Throughout three managerial changes at Roma he found it hard to adapt in a more possession based approach, but in an attacking environment he will flourish in the Premier League.
The Serie A side released more details on the deal, as Roma stated that $38 million would be paid up front with the potential for another $7.5 million in add ons.
A deal has been lined up for Lamela for some time and with Spurs’ Willian deal hijacked by Chelsea last week, the need for the Argentinian star to arrive at White Hart Lane intensified. Now Tottenham fans can add Lamela’s name to the list of famous Argentines to pull on the Spurs shirt.
Back in the 1980s when Spurs won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup and were challenging for the English title with their flamboyant style of play, two Argentinian internationals stole the show. Ricardo Villa and Osvaldo Ardiles are still held in high esteem today amongst Spurs fans.
Can another Argentine star bring success and trophies Tottenham?
Lamela has all the tools to succeed and is the leading light in a summer of heavy recruitment from Spurs. The wide attacker joins Etienne Capoue, Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Nacer Chadli in Andre Villas-Boas’ new-look team.
Count up the cost of all of those players and it amounts to around $130 million. Bale is expected to be sold for around $125 million to Real Madrid.
Five players for the price of one, I would say Tottenham have done pretty well out of Bale’s impending sale.
Now it’s time for Lamela to take Bale’s mantle at Tottenham. No pressure, Erik.
